If you are looking for "techie" definitions, this Glossary is not for you. We've tried to simplify the meaning of some fairly common technical jargon into something that can be easily understood by the non-technical person.

Back End

the code and/or database that makes the website work and is not visible to the user (see also Front End)

Banner Ad (or Tile)

a form of online advertising that allows users to click it go to your website. It's like a tiny billboard for your business on the Internet.

Domain Name

name that identifies a web address (for example: MSWInteractiveDesigns.com)

e-Commerce

selling products or services through a website (see also Storefront)

Front End

the portion of the website that is visible to the user (see also Back End)

Hits

the number of calls to the web server made when displaying a page on your website — one visitor can generate a multiple hits, so using this number as a measure of website traffic can be very inflated and misleading

Home page

the first page or entry page of your website

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)

the format that used to create documents on the Web

Internet Service Provider

the company that provides your connection to the Internet

Search Engine

a tool to help you find things on the Internet

Spider

Search engines use programs that “crawl” the Web, often referred to as Spiders. They index and organize websites across the Internet.


Storefront

online mechanism to conduct eCommerce (see also e-Commerce)


Unique Visitors

a count of the individual visits to your website

URL (Uniform Resource Locator)

the location for a file on a website
